The Every Student Succeeds Act, or ESSA, the main federal law for K-12 public education, requires that states hold public schools accountable for how students achieve. New York State established a set of indicators to measure school and district performance. This reflects the percentage of graduates from this school who enrolled in a 2-year college or university immediately following high school. Advanced Placement classes are rigorous classes with a final exam. The percentage of students taking AP exams may reflect whether the school culture is focused on college.
