MTH's founder, Mike Wolf, started assembling and selling trains at the age of 12 in 1973 for Williams Electric Trains, which had begun producing reproductions of vintage trains manufactured by Lionel Corporation, in the early 1970s. By 1980, Wolf was operating a mail order business selling Williams trains and parts out of his bedroom in his parents' home. This now discontinued product line was created as part of a ten-year licensing arrangement between M.T.H. Electric Trains and Lionel LLC. The license expired in May 2019 and no more Lionel Corporation Tinplate products are being produced. LA's biggest and best-known train museum is Travel Town at Griffith Park. This free museum has examples of trains from various time periods lined up on tracks like a railroad station. There's also an exhibit hall with additional railroad and transportation artifacts and memorabilia. Travel Town is on the north (Valley) side of Griffith Park off Zoo Drive. A 16 gauge Train Ride operates around the perimeter of Travel Town.

Depending on the day, you might find the 1894 Fred Gurley Engine 3, the 1902 Ward Kimball Engine 4 or the 1925 Ernest S. Marsh Engine 5, all constructed by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. The antique Fred Gurly Engine 3 is the oldest engine running at any Disneyland park. The Disneyland Train Station is also equipped with an interesting selection of authentic antique and vintage railroad equipment from lanterns and clocks to a 1930s instructograph. This time around it was against its longtime HO competitor Broadway Limited Imports. Mike Wolf alleged that Robert Grubba, president of Broadway Limited Imports, stole the patented microprocessing technology that synchronizes puffing smoke with the chuffing sound of a locomotive. M.T.H. claimed to have first developed the technology in 2000, according to the suit filed in US District Court in Baltimore. Wolf discovered the infringement when he purchased one of the locomotives in Florida-based BLI’s line.

In April 2000, M.T.H. again sued Lionel, this time in a US Federal District Court for industrial espionage, citing as evidence original electronic drawing files and the precedent set in the South Korean criminal courts. On June 7, 2004, a jury in Detroit, Michigan found Lionel and its subcontractor Korea Brass guilty and awarded M.T.H. $40.8 million in damages. The following day, Lionel announced it would appeal the verdict.
Grubba was previously chief engineer at Lionel Trains when MTH sued Lionel in Federal court in 2000, won at trial and later settled. The Premier Line offerings of 'O' scale were targeted at serious finescale modelers. M.T.H. S Gauge trains are M.T.H.'s newest product line first appearing in 2013. These smaller models run on S gauge 2-rail track from any manufacturer.
The Starcraft 40-passenger bus was traveling westbound on Exposition Boulevard with only the driver and one passenger aboard when the collision occurred, according to a statement from USC Transportation.
